April 11 — 2013. SpellRush is a stunning, new free word game for iPhone by the new Swedish startup Tappily. As you launch SpellRush, you'll notice how every single view is full of custom animations, and you'll quickly start to wonder why your life isn't always this full of colorful confetti.
In SpellRush, you swipe over letters to create words. Used tiles disappear in a cloud of smoke, and new tiles fall down from the top of the board. You have 120 hectic seconds to find as many words as possible.
The longer words you create, the more points you score. Multipliers help you score even more: every time you create a word worth over 10 points, you get a star. When you've collected three stars, they transform into a multiplier and jump onto the board.
Players can challenge their friends to epic best-of-5-battles through Apple's Game Center. By upgrading to Premium, you can unlock the shake to shuffle feature, as well disable delays, view all completed words after every round, and view detailed statistics over your progress.
SpellRush launches with support for 11 languages; English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish.
Unlike most other social games, SpellRush is built by someone who loves word games and puzzles, and not by a company who pushes users into paying over and over again for overly addictive and yet soulless experiences. SpellRush is built around the belief that fun gameplay, great quality and a strong personality is enough to make a dent in the universe.
SpellRush can be downloaded for free from the App Store.Download on the App Store
SpellRush is the first app from the new startup Tappily, an app studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. It's currently a one-person studio run by Tobias Ahlin.
Tobias Ahlin worked as a Product Designer at Spotify for over two years. He was during a long period the only UI designer at the company, and worked with virtually all of Spotify's apps—the desktop apps for Mac and PC, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, and third party apps.
During 2012 he designed Spotify's iPad app, which on its release was quoted by The Verge as being both "stunning" and having a "great design". Techradar hailed, amongst other things, the Now Playing View: "The full Now Playing screen is lovely – the artwork takes centre stage (and looks fabulous when coupled with the new iPad's Retina Display), and you skip songs simply by swiping up or down. It's such a simple thing but a real pleasure to use." In December of 2012, Tobias left Spotify to start Tappily.
Rather than outsourcing anything or using consultants, Tobias currently tackles everything himself. He's the designer, iOS developer, web developer, and sound producer. SpellRush is Tappily's very first project, and just a small taste of what is to come.
